P7 Cycling Proficiency – Building Skills for Safe, Confident Cycling
Our P7 pupils have begun their Cycling Proficiency Course, developing the essential skills they need to become safe, responsible and confident young cyclists. Over the sessions, pupils are learning how to look after their bikes, make safe decisions on the road, and handle real?life cycling situations with independence.
What P7 Have Been Learning
• Bike safety checks — pupils learned how to inspect brakes, tyres, handlebars, helmets and overall bike condition before riding.
• Pedal ready position — understanding how to start safely and smoothly.
• Starting and stopping — practising controlled take offs and safe, steady stops.
• Emergency stop — learning how to react quickly and safely when something unexpected happens.
• Parking a bike — ensuring bikes are left safely and securely.
• Overtaking safely — understanding when it is safe to pass and how to communicate clearly.
Why This Matters
Cycling proficiency gives pupils:
• Confidence to travel safely
• Awareness of road rules and hazards
• Independence as they prepare for post primary life
• Healthy habits that support wellbeing and active lifestyles
Our pupils have shown fantastic focus, enthusiasm and maturity throughout the course. We are incredibly proud of the skills they are developing and the responsibility they are showing.
